In this episode of the Tax Rep Network Podcast, Eric Green is joined by Roger Knecht, founder of Universal Accounting, for a candid, wide-ranging conversation about sacrifice, overwhelm, clarity, and the realities of entrepreneurial success.
Drawing from decades of experience training accounting and bookkeeping professionals, Roger breaks down why success isn’t about working harder – it’s about having clear goals, making intentional tradeoffs, and staying focused when life inevitably gets in the way. Together, Eric and Roger explore why overwhelm causes so many practitioners to quit, how breaking big goals into small daily actions creates momentum, and why surrounding yourself with the right community can normalize success and accelerate growth.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or questioning whether building your own practice is worth the effort, this episode offers both perspective and practical guidance—without the hype.

Running an accounting or tax practice often looks glamorous from the outside—flexibility, independence, and unlimited upside. But behind the scenes, many practitioners feel overwhelmed, stretched thin, and unsure how to grow without sacrificing their health, families, or sanity. In a recent conversation on the Tax Rep Network podcast, Eric Green sat down with Roger Knecht, president of Universal Accounting, to unpack why overwhelm happens—and how successful professionals push through it without burning out.
Roger’s message is simple but powerful: success has two sides. One side is vision—clarity about what you want, why you want it, and what success actually looks like for you. The other side is sacrifice. Every successful person, whether an entrepreneur, athlete, or artist, gives something up in the short term to achieve something bigger in the long term. The danger comes when people sacrifice without clarity. Without a clear destination, the hard work starts to feel pointless, and overwhelm sets in fast.
One of the biggest drivers of overwhelm, Roger explained, is lack of clarity. Many professionals say they want “more”—more money, more freedom, more balance—but can’t define what that actually means in daily life. Without a clear picture, it’s impossible to know whether you’re making progress, which makes quitting feel tempting. The second cause is life itself. Setbacks, distractions, and unexpected challenges happen to everyone. The difference between those who succeed and those who stall is perspective: some trip over obstacles and stop, while others step on them and move higher.
The third factor is comfort. When things get hard, people naturally look for relief. Sometimes those coping mechanisms help—but often they slow progress or create new problems. Real momentum comes from healthier strategies: breaking goals into small, manageable steps; tracking progress daily; and surrounding yourself with people who are doing what you want to do.
Eric shared a powerful analogy from Navy SEAL training: when the path feels overwhelming, make your world small. Focus on the next task, not the next six months. Finish today. Then repeat. In practice-building terms, that might mean landing one new client this month, adjusting pricing slightly, or implementing one new system. Small wins build confidence, and confidence reduces overwhelm.
Both Eric and Roger emphasized the importance of community. Being around peers normalizes success. Conferences, peer groups, and professional networks show you that growth is achievable—and that the people doing it aren’t superheroes. They’re just consistent. That’s why events like GrowCon matter so much. Beyond the speakers, they create connections that last long after the event ends.
Finally, Roger offered a critical reminder: no success can compensate for failure at home. Ambition should never come at the expense of family, health, or relationships. Sustainable success is about perspective, clarity, and balance—not endless grind.
The takeaway is reassuring: feeling overwhelmed is normal. Quitting because of it is optional. With clear goals, small steps, and the right community—like Tax Rep Network—overwhelm becomes a signal to refocus, not a reason to stop.
