Taxpayers who are late with filing or paying come from all walks of life. Some are in trouble because of unemployment, illness or medical bills; others have suffered weather disasters and corresponding losses; and some have lost spouses that have prepared and handled the taxes for decades. Still others have been through nasty divorces and inherited a tax problem through an ex-spouse that did not handle things correctly.
There is a small percentage of taxpayers who are willful evaders. You can always say no to any client in much the same way you might with a 1040 client. However often these folks show up because they want to correct this and need help getting back into the tax system properly.
In the program, we’ll show you what to do so that never happens again. In a nutshell, we’ll show you how to get paid in advance before you do any work. We’ve found these clients to be very profitable, but there is a special way to handle billings with them, and we teach that in our program.
You can certainly help nonfilers with catch-up bookkeeping and tax return filings, and these services alone can be very profitable. Until you get certified or become enrolled you won’t be able to do the IRS representation piece. Joining the program will provide you with a network of peers who can perform the tax rep piece for you, without taking your client away from you.
If you’re eager to learn this area and you’re working on your EA or CPA, we suggest you consider joining the Silver Level of TRN. Then, when you get credentialed, you can upgrade to Gold.
No, that’s a myth (probably started to cut down on competition since this area is so profitable — okay, that might be another myth). In any case, the IRS is too short-staffed and has too many other nonfilers, nonpayers, and criminals with strong evidence of wrongdoing to go after than it does to waste their time going after your clients for no good reason. In fact, the IRS generally appreciates us because we are all working toward the same goal: getting the taxpayer into compliance by filing their returns and paying their tax. Retaliation is not what the IRS does. Eric Green has done this work for 22 years, speaks all over the country, and has never been audited.
Smart entrepreneurs will invest in programs that will provide them with a return on investment in added revenue. This program is designed to do just that. How to attract your first tax rep client in included in every level of the program. Once you get only one new tax rep client, you will have enough money to pay for this program for more than one year.
If you’re a new business owner, sometimes financial sacrifices have to be made in other areas of your life. There are ways to save on monthly expenses so that you have enough to invest in yourself and your business until the revenue starts to flow. Less Starbucks, spreading out the haircuts, fewer nights out on the town, watching the game on cable instead of live, etc. Only you can decide how bad you want something.
IRS Representation, interestingly, is not about technical tax or law, but rather about administrative procedure. It certainly does not hurt to have done tax returns before or to have some technical tax knowledge but anyone can do this.
The best thing for that is to get to know the employees. They are just people. About 30 IRS employees attended our annual IRS Representation conference in November. You can get to know them, mingle with them, have lunch with them.
If you’ve had a situation in the past where you felt that an IRS officer was taking advantage of their role or being unfair to a taxpayer, we’ll show you how to deal with that in the program. There are remedies and solutions.
You have to decide if your fear is going to hold you back from trying this opportunity or if you can get past it and reap the rewards in your practice.
There are many tax resolution chains that market aggressively through Google ads. Most of the clients we have experience with are turned off by the national chains and want a local tax professional to help them with their financial issues. As a local business owner, you will have an easier chance building trust with these clients than the national chains.
Plus, it’s really no different than competing against H&R Block or Jackson-Hewitt for 1040 clients or Bench or Intuit for bookkeeping clients, except that these clients are more profitable, and you need fewer of them (by far) to generate a really nice revenue figure. The good news is you’re far from a commodity like these solutions are.
In a word, Eric. The head coach and instructor of this program, Eric Green, is an active, practicing attorney, so he has a constant stream of fresh casework that he can work into his sessions. He has developed a national reputation by building a remarkable record of negotiating favorable settlements in thousands of civil cases against government agencies and has also been able to convince government agents and attorneys to forgo criminal charges and civilly resolve many cases. Most importantly, he is happy to share his case-winning strategies with Tax Rep Network members.
I can’t wait to welcome you into the program and get started helping you build your tax rep practice.
