This 60‑minute session provides accounting and tax practitioners with a practical, technically grounded understanding of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be safely and effectively integrated into firm operations. The course examines where AI delivers measurable value in tax and accounting workflows, where it introduces compliance and verification risks, and how professionals can apply responsible governance principles to protect clients and uphold regulatory standards.

Participants will explore the current state of AI adoption across the profession, including the use of AI for pattern recognition, document summarization, data extraction, and file intelligence. The session contrasts these benefits with the risks that directly affect tax practice, such as hallucinated citations, fabricated case law, incorrect interpretations of IRS guidance, and unverified output used in client‑facing deliverables.

The course introduces a clear vocabulary for distinguishing deterministic systems from non‑deterministic generative models, enabling practitioners to match the right tool to the right task based on accuracy, auditability, and the level of professional judgment required. The session also addresses the implications of AI on due diligence, Circular 230 obligations, and the supervision of staff who may be using AI tools informally or without proper controls.

Participants will leave with a practical checklist of low‑risk, high‑value AI applications for tax and accounting firms, along with a structured evaluation filter for assessing vendor tools, understanding model limitations, and implementing responsible AI governance

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between deterministic and non‑deterministic AI systems and explain how each aligns with tax‑related tasks requiring accuracy, audit trails, and verifiable authority.
  • Identify where AI provides high‑leverage benefits in tax and accounting workflows, including pattern recognition, document summarization, data extraction, and file intelligence, and where it poses significant risk in citation‑dependent or authority‑driven work.
  • Evaluate AI‑generated tax content for accuracy by applying verification standards consistent with Circular 230, IRS guidance, and professional due diligence requirements.
  • Develop a practical checklist for using generative AI in firm functions such as client communication, marketing, administrative operations, and busy‑season workflow support while maintaining compliance safeguards.
  • Apply a structured buying filter to assess AI tools pitched by vendors, including model architecture, data provenance, certainty measurement, and the presence or absence of verification controls.
  • Formulate a plan to mitigate the risks of Shadow AI by training staff on critical evaluation, implementing governance checkpoints, and adjusting supervision models to ensure responsible use of AI throughout the tax engagement lifecycle.
