Can the IRS refile a lien just to extend its time to collect taxes?
No. The IRS cannot refile a lien simply to extend the statute of limitations. It may only refile if the collection statute has been legally extended, such as when the taxpayer files for bankruptcy, submits an Offer in Compromise, or requests a Collection Due Process hearing. These actions temporarily stop the clock, giving the IRS more time to collect.
