What if the taxpayer sells the property in a short-sale and will not receive any money from the deal?

If the property is being sold and the entire amount of proceeds will be used by creditors ahead of the IRS then the IRS will issue a discharge as there is no equity for it to get (i.e. the taxpayer\’s interest is zero, so the IRS\’s interest is zero as well).
