What should a practitioner include in a retainer agreement for a collection client?

A well-drafted retainer agreement is essential to set expectations and avoid disputes. It should clearly define the scope of services, whether the engagement covers only the IRS matter or also includes state tax issues, such as Department of Revenue or Franchise Tax Board cases. Additionally, it should outline the fee structure, payment schedule, and what constitutes completion of services. Transparency at the outset protects both the client and practitioner and helps avoid misunderstandings as the case progresses.
