Is a good-faith misunderstanding of the law a defense?

Yes, if you truly believed you weren\’t breaking the law , even if that belief was unreasonable. But claiming the tax laws are unconstitutional is not a defense. To be convicted of a felony the IRS must show the taxpayer intentional violated a known legal duty. If the taxpayer did not know about he duty, then they can not have intentionally violated it.
