Does it make sense to amend the tax returns to become married-filing-separate and prevent the spouse from being responsible for the debt?

Though a couple that filed separately can later elect to amend and file jointly, once a couple has elected to file jointly, they CANNOT amend tax returns to elect to file separately. So, the couple that has elected to file joint tax returns is stuck with any joint liability unless one of the spouse\’s qualify as an innocent spouse under IRC 6015.
